- Vegetation Management | SEIREMC
Vegetation Management Our communities depend upon the safe, reliable and affordable delivery of electricity. One of the leading causes of interruptions to the safe flow of electricity is trees and other plants growing too high or coming too close to power lines. To safeguard the reliability of the distribution system, Southeastern Indiana REMC has implemented a vegetation management plan to control the growth of trees and other woody-stemmed vegetation around equipment and rights-of-way. The goal of this plan is to balance our society's need for reliable energy with respect for the environment while complying with all applicable laws and federal requirements. Proper selection and placement of trees minimizes the need for utility pruning Trees are responsible for nearly two-thirds of our outages each year Southeastern Indiana REMC trims trees on our electric system on a regular 5-year cycle Trees must coexist with a variety of human-made structures, both above and below ground. Most commonly they compete for space with overhead power lines, but trees also conflict with communication lines, street lighting, buildings, lines of sight, sidewalks, roads, and underground utilities. The best way to maximize the many benefits provided by trees is to plant them where they will not outgrow their space. However, trees that threaten the integrity of utility or other vital infrastructure must be pruned or removed. Stormy weather can blow tree limbs into distribution lines, causing outages, and even toppling the trunks entirely, breaking poles and creating hazards. Limbs and leaves in contact with power lines can conduct electricity, creating a potentially dangerous condition for anyone who comes near. Tree-to-line contact also contributes to what electric system professionals call "line loss." The term refers to electricity created at a generating plant that does not reach its destination, an inefficiency that increases costs for everyone. Southeastern Indiana REMC spends considerable amounts of money every year to trim trees. The REMC specifies to our contractors that all power lines should be cleared at least 20 feet on each side of the power line and 20 feet underneath the line. Experience has shown us these are the minimum distances we can trim to keep a safe, reliable flow of electricity and be cost-effective. Please contact our office if you have trees on your property that could endanger the power lines. Do not tackle this job yourself. Every year amateur tree trimmers are hurt or killed when trying to clear limbs near power lines. Call the professionals at the REMC. Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden Southeastern Indiana REMC partnered with the Cincinnati Zoo in 2011 to allow them to collect clippings twice a week during the months of June, July and August. These clippings are taken back to the zoo, washed and freeze-dried, to help feed the animals throughout the winter months. Helicopter Tree Trimming Highly skilled pilots use a 10-bladed saw, suspended below the helicopter, to trim limbs in right-of-way reducing the risk of injury to tree workers, as well as the time and cost associated with ground-to-sky trimming in difficult terrain and remote areas. National Wildlife Turkey Federation Southeastern Indiana REMC has partnered with the National Wild Turkey Federation to plant wildflowers and grasses in our right-of-way’s when possible

This program will be extended on a first-come, first-served basis to all members who want to invest in, and be a part of, a cooperative solar program without having to own and maintain a rooftop solar system. You asked for it, we researched it, and we are now offering it: solar energy for your home without the hassle of ownership or maintenance! Southeastern Indiana REMC heard your request for more renewable energy. We understand that in our region, it may be hard for some of our members to do this on their own. Trees, permits, financing and roof issues may have been road blocks in the past. But not anymore. Southeastern Indiana REMC is excited to offer a community solar program called My Solar. This program allows any member to use solar energy at their home or business without installing or maintaining a private solar project. Member participants are able to share in the output from one of 10 solar arrays already located around southern Indiana. The power generated at the solar arrays is transported from the arrays, through the poles and wires Southeastern Indiana REMC has already built and maintains. Nothing new needs to be attached. You’re set! The My Solar program offers members the opportunity to purchase one share of the community solar project. One share is equivalent to the energy from one solar panel. The size of the panels varies between the 10 solar sites, but averages ~330 Watts. In one year, one share will produce ~450 – 500 kWh. Each participant is limited to 12 panels – approximately three kW. - Rural Energy Audit | SEIREMC
Rural Energy Audit Southeastern Indiana REMC and Hoosier Energy have teamed up to offer your farm or rural business the opportunity to take part in a shared cost American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) Level II Energy Audit. Certified energy auditors will review your operation’s energy consumption, facilities equipment and run-times in an on-site visit to determine opportunities for bottom line energy savings. Learn More ! What is an Energy Audit? An energy audit is a detailed look at the equipment using energy at a property and how much energy is being consumed by each annually. Why should you have an Energy Audit? Energy audits help determine where improvements should be made for the best return on investment at your operation. Energy audits can help you find potential incentives (rebates, USDA grants, etc.) that may be available for the various types of improvements. At the end of the day audits assist in finding ways to save energy and money, improving your bottom line. Is an Energy Audit right for me? Many people find great value in an energy audit. If you are not sure, please call your local electric cooperative to discuss the specifics to your operation. Cooperative staff will help determine if an energy audit is right for you and will help you meet your energy consumption goals. How much will an Energy Audit cost? A USDA grant will pay 75% of audit cost. These costs vary depending on the type of facility, size, etc. The average total cost of an energy audit ranges between $2,000-$6,000. You will be responsible for 25% of the total audit costs. This cost share model provides opportunity for greater scope and potential savings in the energy audit process. What should I do if I am interest? Your electric cooperative can help provide you with historical electric energy use data for the last 2-3 years. You will also need to collect additional energy consumption information such as LP or natural gas. An energy advisor will need to walk around your site and discuss your operations, equipment run times, etc. This site visit will take approximately between 1.5 to 3 hours depending on site. When will I receive my results report? Reports are completed within 30 days of the site visit, unless we are missing information that is vital to the completion of the report. We will keep you informed all along the way and reach out to you should additional information be needed to complete your energy audit. - Connect to Save | SEIREMC
Connect to Save Earn incentives for using less energy during peak hours Do you currently own or plan on purchasing a smart thermostat or electric vehicle charger? If so, we encourage you to enroll in Connect to Save, a pilot for Southeastern Indiana REMC’s electric residential members. Connect to Save rewards you for allowing us to adjust your thermostat or EV charger's energy use during certain peak periods. Upon enrollment approval, you’ll receive an initial incentive of $75 per device enrolled. Each year after that, you will receive an additional $25 per enrolled device.* Apply Now! What is Connect to Save? When temperatures soar or plummet, home heating and cooling use also increases, creating an “energy rush hour.” Electric cooperatives such as Southeastern Indiana REMC request more generation to meet the higher demand, which in turn drives up power costs. By lowering energy use throughout our system during times of peak demand, we can lower our power costs. Because electric cooperatives are not-for-profit, those savings are then passed on to you. Together, we can work to lower costs. A smart thermostat can help you use less energy during rush hour by cooling or heating your home ahead of time. Adjusting the temperature a few degrees thereafter is all it takes to help keep power costs down. Eligible Devices Smart Thermostats Your thermostat will adjust the temperature to balance energy savings. If you wish not to participate, you can always choose to change the temperature on your thermostat and opt out of that particular event. How does it work ? For starters, you must connect your enrolled device to Wi-Fi and enroll in Connect to Save. During times of high electricity demand or “peak energy use” when air conditioners or heaters kick into high gear, you will be notified via email, and your enrolled device will respond accordingly to reduce consumption. EV Chargers EV chargers will respond the same way by reducing the amount of energy used to charge. This may be accomplished by slowing the charge rate or shifting the charging window to a time when energy use is low. More Information Frequently Asked Questions | Terms and Conditions | Contact Us

A C-wire (common wire) is a low voltage power wire that many modern thermostats require for their features to work. This ecobee3 lite requires a C-wire or installation of the power extended kit (included) to work. Many older homes don't have a C-wire because mercury and battery-powered thermostats didn't require one. Therefore, it is important that you make sure that you have a C-wire and that your HVAC system is compatible with ecobee's thermostat. To determine if you have a C-wire, please consult ecobee's compatibility checker . You can also hire an HVAC contractor to help you install the C-wire and thermostat.

- Beat The Peak | SEIREMC
Beat The Peak Program Beat the Peak is a voluntary program of Southeastern Indiana REMC designed to encourage members to reduce their energy usage during peak demand periods. You will not see a credit on your bill for conserving energy nor will you be charged more for power if you do not conserve. This is a voluntary program, which benefits all Co-op members. Currently, 66% of the REMCs operating cost is for the wholesale power we purchase from Hoosier Energy. If we all work together to help reduce the demand during peak times, we can reduce the REMC's power costs. Because Southeastern Indiana REMC is a not-for-profit utility, those savings are passed on to you in the form of affordable rates. Peak demand periods occur when the demand for electricity is the highest - weekdays June-August, 4-7 p.m. and December-February, 7-10 a.m. and 6-9 p.m. During these peak periods, the co-op is charged a higher cost from our power supplier, Hoosier Energy. If we can all work together to reduce the demand, we can reduce the REMC's power costs and minimize increases you may receive on your bill. How the Beat the Peak Program works: Members - Text #BeatThePeak to 22300 to opt-in to receive text only alerts or receive notifications via phone, email, and text . SEIREMC - Send BEAT THE PEAK ALERT to notify members of the date and time of the anticipated peak period. Members - Reduce energy consumption during peak period.
- Patronage Capital | SEIREMC
Patronage Capital Patronage Capital refunds (or also known as capital credits) are retained margins left over at the end of a year at a not-for-profit electric cooperative. Capital credits represent the most significant source of equity for Southeastern Indiana REMC. Since a cooperative’s “shareholders” are also the people the co-op serves, capital credits reflect each member’s ownership in the cooperative. This differs from dividends that investor-owned utilities pay shareholders, who may or may not be customers of the utility. The information contained in this website listing is for general information purposes only. The list of names is provided by “Southeastern Indiana REMC”. Although we will strive to keep the names up-to-date and correct, we make no representations or warranties of any kind, express or implied, about the completeness, accuracy, or reliability with respect to the list of names provided on this website. Forms: Individual Claim Form | Business HOW MUCH PATRONAGE (CAPITAL CREDITS) IS BEING REFUNDED IN 2022? Your Board approved refunding capital credits for the years 1999, and part of 2020. The total amount of patronage to be refunded is $1,514,590.85. We typically only refund around 74% of this amount or about $1,120,797.23 due to not having a valid address for some former members. WHERE DOES THE MONEY COME FROM? Member-owned, not-for-profit electric utilities like Southeastern Indiana REMC set rates to generate enough money to pay operating costs, make payments on any loans, and provide an emergency reserve. At the end of each calendar year, we subtract operating expenses from the total amount of money collected during the year. The balance is called a margin. HOW ARE MARGINS ALLOCATED? Margins are allocated to members as capital credits based on their purchases from the cooperative – how much power the member used. Member purchases may also be called patronage. WHY DOES MY COOPERATIVE REFUND CAPITAL CREDITS? Doing so follows one of our seven cooperative principles – Members’ Economic Participation – through rotation of capital. Capital rotation/refund, when determined feasible by the Board, is also required to meet IRS requirements to maintain our 501 C12 tax status. Capital rotation/refund is also used as a tool to target our optimum equity range, which falls between 40% to 60%. If cash is available and equity is on the high end of the range, a capital credit refund to members is an appropriate consideration of our Board in controlling our system equity. ARE CAPITAL CREDITS REFUNDED EVERY YEAR? Each year, the Southeastern Indiana REMC Board of Directors decides whether to refund capital credits based on the financial health of the cooperative. During some years, the co-op may experience extreme weather patterns which significantly affects kWh sales and margins, high growth in the number of new accounts added, maintaining an optimal equity level, rate inadequacy due to inflated costs since the last rate revision, or severe storms may result in the need to spend additional funds to repair lines and restore electric service. These events might lower cash and member equity, causing the board to defer any capital credit refund. For this reason, Southeastern Indiana REMC’s ability to return margins to members in the form of capital credits reflects your cooperative’s strength and financial stability. DO I LOSE MY CAPITAL CREDITS IN THE YEARS THE CO-OP DECIDES NOT TO MAKE REFUNDS? No. All capital credits from every year members have been served by Southeastern Indiana REMC are maintained until such time as the board refunds them. Prior to this year, Southeastern Indiana REMC refunded all capital credits through 1998 and parts of 2017-2019. HOW MUCH HAS SOUTHEASTERN INDIANA REMC PAID IN TOTAL CAPITAL CREDIT REFUNDS SINCE IT BEGAN IN 1939? Southeastern Indiana REMC has paid $30,418,955.23 in capital credit refunds to current and former members to date. HOW OFTEN DO MEMBERS RECEIVE CAPITAL CREDITS? The Southeastern Indiana REMC Board of Directors decides each year whether to refund capital credits. When the cooperative is strong enough financially and the member equity levels are high enough, the board directs staff to refund some portion of past years’ capital credits. HOW WILL REFUNDS BE ISSUED? Members currently receiving electric service will see the refund as a separate line item on their electric bill in March. Inactive members (with capital credits due) will receive a capital credit check. Due to the expense involved in processing printed checks, the minimum capital credit check that will be written will be $5. WHAT IF I HAVE MOVED? If you move or no longer have electric service with Southeastern Indiana REMC it is important to keep your address current, so future disbursements can be properly mailed. Capital credits are reserved for members even if they move out of the Southeastern Indiana REMC service area. Southeastern Indiana REMC will make a diligent effort to send a check to a valid address by mail. HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL GET REFUNDS? Roughly 21,850 currently active members will receive a bill credit on their primary electric account and another 8,550 active members (i.e. Beneficiaries) will receive a check from Southeastern Indiana REMC. More Information We appreciate the opportunity to serve you and thank you for being a member. If you have additional questions about capital credits, please call (812) 689-4111.
