- Grassroot Advocacy | SEIREMC
Grassroots Political engagement helps electric cooperatives continue to serve rural Indiana well. Grassroots advocacy is a crucial component. Why Politics Matter For most people, their electricity provider is just the company that keeps the lights on. But an electric cooperative’s relationship with its consumer-owners is different. Since the 1930s when Indiana’s electric cooperatives were formed, they’ve thrived because of the political engagement between their consumer-owners and local, state and federal governments. Indiana’s electric cooperatives advocate for rural Hoosiers like you on the state and federal levels so they can continue providing safe, reliable and affordable energy — and maintain the quality of life in rural communities. But electric cooperatives need your help in the process, too. Indiana’s electric cooperatives thrive when their consumer-owners stay politically engaged and advocate for policies that help cooperatives best serve their consumers. How can you do this? It all starts with grassroots activism. In the context of the electric cooperative program, "grassroots" is a powerful word. In fact, the historical success of the electric cooperatives can be credited to grassroots activism. The electric cooperative definition of “grassroots” is “electric cooperative activists — directors, managers, employees and consumer-owners — who take an active role in the political process to protect their cooperative from harmful legislation and regulation, as well as to promote the value of cooperative ownership to their legislators.” Grassroots involvement means communicating with your local, state and federal legislators on issues affecting electric cooperatives. Grassroots — the unified efforts and voices of the nation’s electric co-op supporters — has proven to be the foundation of the industry’s 85 years of success in serving electric co-ops, their owners and their communities. What does a Grassroot Advocate do ? By registering as an advocate for Indiana’s electric cooperatives, you will be kept up to date on major legislative and political utility issues at both the state and federal levels. You will receive monthly communication via email or text alert, ranging from educational pieces, surveys, story collections, and even calls to action. Grassroots advocates for Indiana’s electric cooperatives help keep rural Indiana strong and the cooperative voice heard. Advocates may also be called upon to contact their legislators and speak up for Indiana’s electric cooperatives. As a grassroots advocate, you will be on the front lines of keeping rural Hoosiers’ voices loud and strong. Sign up to be a Grassroots Advocate action.indianaec.org

- Wind Turbines | SEIREMC
Wind Turbines Determine how much electricity you use and what it costs, annually and by the kilowatt - hour . Then, find ways to make your home more efficient and reduce your energy use. Start by calculating your average electricity bill. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) provides some rules of thumb in its Small Wind Electric Systems: A U.S. Consumer’s Guide http://energy.gov/eere/office-energy-efficiency-renewable-energy(link is external) Then, conduct an energy audit of your home to identify ways of using energy more efficiently and ways of reducing energy use. United Cooperative Services offers free energy audits to its members. Implementing energy efficiency opportunities will almost always offer a quicker return on your investment and additionally may enhance the viability of a wind turbine project through a lower capital expense associated with a smaller turbine that will satisfy the new lower energy load. This could lower your electricity bill significantly. Determine your site suitability and wind resource. Most experts recommend that you have at least one acre of land if you are considering the installation of a small wind system. Smaller parcels may be suitable if adequate tower setbacks can be achieved. Examine your site for potential turbulence. When wind flows around buildings, trees, and other structures in the landscape, it slows down or becomes turbulent. A wind turbine should be placed in a location where turbulence is minimized. It also should be placed upwind of buildings and trees. In addition, you should determine the “roughness”—the terrain and density of vegetation on the landscape—within a radius equal to 20 times the tower height, in the prevailing wind direction. Determine estimated installed cost of system and calculate return on investment. A rule of thumb for estimating the cost of a small wind system is $4–$10 per installed watt. The total installed cost is the cost of the wind generator and tower plus the cost of permitting, installation, and interconnection to the grid. The payback for a small wind system is the amount of time it takes for the system to pay for itself in energy savings. Graph reflects KWH produced* 132 (cost per kwh)
- Solar Panels | SEIREMC
Solar Panels To assist our members, we have developed a streamlined process that will ensure all members continue to have safe, reliable, efficient and cost-effective electricity. Our mission is to protect the safety of cooperative personnel and member-consumers, maintain the integrity and reliability of the grid, and establish mechanisms to ensure rate fairness for all member-consumers. Consumer-owned generation interconnections can affect the safety and reliability of the distribution system. We have developed technical interconnection rules that address those safety and reliability impacts as well as a net metering rate that ensures fairness across all members. We are ready to help you by offering factual information and answering your questions. It is our goal to provide you with the tools that you need to make an informed decision about adding generation to your home or business. THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE INSTALLING SOLAR Rate Tariff Southeastern Indiana REMC currently purchases excess energy at $0.05 per kwh for systems 50kW and under. For systems over 50kW, excess energy is purchased at Hoosier Energy's current renewable rate. Energy Efficiency Measures Changing out your windows/doors, adding insulation, and upgrading old heating systems and appliances can often save energy at a lower cost than installing solar panels. Updating your home leads to reducing your total energy use. Geothermal heat pumps provide clean, quiet heating and cooling while cutting utility bills by up to 70%, and Southeastern Indiana REMC offers rebates for them. Purpose Is your purpose environmental, to save money, to lower your electric bill, or for outage protection? Cost The average cost of a standard (non-tracking) solar photovoltaic system is $2.50-$4.50 per watt. (The average 10kw system would cost $25,000 - $45,000.) A backup battery system to store excess energy costs an additional $2 per watt. The average payback for PV is 20 years. Square Footage Each kW of power requires about 55-65 sq ft of space (whether it's on your roof or in your yard). A 10kw system would require 550-650 sq ft. Federal Tax Credit There is a federal tax credit for solar projects. Learn more at www.energy.gov . It takes approximately 33 - 300 watt solar panels to power an average Indiana home. Larger homes or inefficient homes would require more. AVOID SOLAR SCAMS 5 things to consider before you install a solar system Installers who make false claims about excessive annual utility rate increases Installers who say NOT to contact your electric cooperative Misleading projected savings Deceptive sales tactics that push you to make a decision or sign a contract before you do your own research False claims that you will have no utility bills or will make money from energy generated Use Trusted Sources If you’re considering a solar array for your home, make sure you are working with a reputable company. Because this is still an emerging industry with evolving technology, there has been a proliferation of pop-up companies in the market to make a quick buck. Southeastern Indiana REMC wants its members to make informed decisions about whether solar is right for them. After all, Southeastern Indiana REMC has a different “bottom line” that is not directly tied to the sale of a product or service. We take a more holistic, objective view of how to achieve energy and cost savings for our members, and that may or may not include solar. Before you sign the dotted line, please feel encouraged to contact us with any solar array questions at engineering@seiremc.com . In this ever-changing environment, it’s important to remember you have a trusted energy advisor – your local electric cooperative. We are a community-focused organization serving our diverse communities with innovative energy solutions and life-enhancing services. Remember, we’re just one call or click away, so please reach out with any questions about your electric service or bills – we’re here to help.
