  • Indiana Connection | SEIREMC

Indiana Connection Magazine Indiana Connection's content celebrates the rural and suburban Indiana lifestyle, and also includes advice on how to stay safe around electricity and how to trim your energy bills. Plus, our members have access to the latest news about issues important to them as consumers of electric and diversified services provided by the REMC. Over 300,000 Hoosiers from all over the state receive the magazine, which is published by Indiana Electric Cooperatives, through their membership in their local electric co-ops. The magazine has informed, entertained and, most importantly, connected with its readers since its first issue in 1951. Back then, it was known as Indiana Rural News . Through the years, the multi-award-winning publication evolved from a tabloid newspaper, to one with a new moniker - Electric Consumer - which referred to its electric cooperative roots, to a slick stock magazine. Finally, March 2019, the magazine rebranded as Indiana Connection, a name chosen to reflect their strong ongoing relationship with their readers. Our readers can’t be pigeon-holed by their background, occupation, age, gender or race. They are anyone and everyone. They are uniquely “Indiana.” Learn More Want to receive your copy of Indiana Connection Magazine electronically? Sign up for the ePub .

  • Vegetation Management | SEIREMC

Vegetation Management Our communities depend upon the safe, reliable and affordable delivery of electricity. One of the leading causes of interruptions to the safe flow of electricity is trees and other plants growing too high or coming too close to power lines. To safeguard the reliability of the distribution system, Southeastern Indiana REMC has implemented a vegetation management plan to control the growth of trees and other woody-stemmed vegetation around equipment and rights-of-way. The goal of this plan is to balance our society's need for reliable energy with respect for the environment while complying with all applicable laws and federal requirements. Proper selection and placement of trees minimizes the need for utility pruning Trees are responsible for nearly two-thirds of our outages each year Southeastern Indiana REMC trims trees on our electric system on a regular 5-year cycle Trees must coexist with a variety of human-made structures, both above and below ground. Most commonly they compete for space with overhead power lines, but trees also conflict with communication lines, street lighting, buildings, lines of sight, sidewalks, roads, and underground utilities. The best way to maximize the many benefits provided by trees is to plant them where they will not outgrow their space. However, trees that threaten the integrity of utility or other vital infrastructure must be pruned or removed. Stormy weather can blow tree limbs into distribution lines, causing outages, and even toppling the trunks entirely, breaking poles and creating hazards. Limbs and leaves in contact with power lines can conduct electricity, creating a potentially dangerous condition for anyone who comes near. Tree-to-line contact also contributes to what electric system professionals call "line loss." The term refers to electricity created at a generating plant that does not reach its destination, an inefficiency that increases costs for everyone. Southeastern Indiana REMC spends considerable amounts of money every year to trim trees. The REMC specifies to our contractors that all power lines should be cleared at least 20 feet on each side of the power line and 20 feet underneath the line. Experience has shown us these are the minimum distances we can trim to keep a safe, reliable flow of electricity and be cost-effective. Please contact our office if you have trees on your property that could endanger the power lines. Do not tackle this job yourself. Every year amateur tree trimmers are hurt or killed when trying to clear limbs near power lines. Call the professionals at the REMC. Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden Southeastern Indiana REMC partnered with the Cincinnati Zoo in 2011 to allow them to collect clippings twice a week during the months of June, July and August. These clippings are taken back to the zoo, washed and freeze-dried, to help feed the animals throughout the winter months. Helicopter Tree Trimming Highly skilled pilots use a 10-bladed saw, suspended below the helicopter, to trim limbs in right-of-way reducing the risk of injury to tree workers, as well as the time and cost associated with ground-to-sky trimming in difficult terrain and remote areas. National Turkey Wildlife Federation Southeastern Indiana REMC has partnered with the National Wild Turkey Federation to plant wildflowers and grasses in our right-of-way’s when possible

  • Media Coverage | SEIREMC

Acerca de Media Coverage Safety Information At Southeastern Indiana REMC, we understand the importance of keeping our members up to date about storm and outage conditions-- however, our primary concern is keeping our crews focused and safe. Whether it's during line construction, accident scenes, or outage restoration, power lines pose numerous hidden dangers. While our linemen are trained to identify and avoid these electrical hazards and work safely, it's critical that everyone else stays clear of the work area and equipment. Aside from the risk of serious injury, spectators can divert a lineman's attention from their current task. When working with wires carrying 14,400 volts of electricity, linemen must be able to focus their thoughts on what they're doing. Following a storm, debris and broken or fallen tree limbs can pose numerous additional risks. Downed or low-hanging lines can still be energized and deadly. 'Getting the story' should never get in the way of maintaining your own personal safety. If you have any questions about a Southeastern Indiana REMC work site, please ask one of the lineworkers for the best place to position a vehicle, camera, or reporter to maximize the safety of news crews and minimize distraction. Southeastern Indiana REMC provides updates and a real-time outage on our website Outage Map . Periodic updates are also provided through our Facebook and Twitter social media channels. Questions? Media Contact B.J.
