  • Vegetation Management | SEIREMC

Vegetation Management Our communities depend upon the safe, reliable and affordable delivery of electricity. One of the leading causes of interruptions to the safe flow of electricity is trees and other plants growing too high or coming too close to power lines. To safeguard the reliability of the distribution system, Southeastern Indiana REMC has implemented a vegetation management plan to control the growth of trees and other woody-stemmed vegetation around equipment and rights-of-way. The goal of this plan is to balance our society's need for reliable energy with respect for the environment while complying with all applicable laws and federal requirements. Proper selection and placement of trees minimizes the need for utility pruning Trees are responsible for nearly two-thirds of our outages each year Southeastern Indiana REMC trims trees on our electric system on a regular 5-year cycle Trees must coexist with a variety of human-made structures, both above and below ground. Most commonly they compete for space with overhead power lines, but trees also conflict with communication lines, street lighting, buildings, lines of sight, sidewalks, roads, and underground utilities. The best way to maximize the many benefits provided by trees is to plant them where they will not outgrow their space. However, trees that threaten the integrity of utility or other vital infrastructure must be pruned or removed. Stormy weather can blow tree limbs into distribution lines, causing outages, and even toppling the trunks entirely, breaking poles and creating hazards. Limbs and leaves in contact with power lines can conduct electricity, creating a potentially dangerous condition for anyone who comes near. Tree-to-line contact also contributes to what electric system professionals call "line loss." The term refers to electricity created at a generating plant that does not reach its destination, an inefficiency that increases costs for everyone. Southeastern Indiana REMC spends considerable amounts of money every year to trim trees. The REMC specifies to our contractors that all power lines should be cleared at least 20 feet on each side of the power line and 20 feet underneath the line. Experience has shown us these are the minimum distances we can trim to keep a safe, reliable flow of electricity and be cost-effective. Please contact our office if you have trees on your property that could endanger the power lines. Do not tackle this job yourself. Every year amateur tree trimmers are hurt or killed when trying to clear limbs near power lines. Call the professionals at the REMC. Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden Southeastern Indiana REMC partnered with the Cincinnati Zoo in 2011 to allow them to collect clippings twice a week during the months of June, July and August. These clippings are taken back to the zoo, washed and freeze-dried, to help feed the animals throughout the winter months. Helicopter Tree Trimming Highly skilled pilots use a 10-bladed saw, suspended below the helicopter, to trim limbs in right-of-way reducing the risk of injury to tree workers, as well as the time and cost associated with ground-to-sky trimming in difficult terrain and remote areas. National Wildlife Turkey Federation Southeastern Indiana REMC has partnered with the National Wild Turkey Federation to plant wildflowers and grasses in our right-of-way’s when possible

  • What is Streaming TV | SEIREMC

Which is better? Traditional vs. Streaming: Every family’s needs are a little different, and your home internet and TV experience should be customizable to your preferences. If you’ve been using cable or satellite to watch all your regular content for as long as you can remember, maybe it’s time to consider the switch to streaming. Let's take a look at the benefits and drawbacks of traditional TV and streaming options to help you decide which might be best for you. What is streaming? Streaming video is the process of watching your favorite movies and shows via the internet, instead of a traditional cable or satellite TV connection. There are a variety of streaming platforms, including Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime. These and others offer a wide selection of content in an accessible and user-friendly location. Streaming can simplify your viewing experience and provide access to more content than you might have had with cable or satellite TV. We’ll walk you through how to set up streaming in your home , but first, let’s consider some of the benefits of streaming your movies and shows. Benefits of Streaming: Streaming can save you money because you can be more selective about what you’re paying for. You can put your streaming accounts on hold when you’re not using them. If you use a platform to follow a sports team, you could put your payment plan on hold during the off-season. It’s easy to pause and recontinue these accounts, and it also helps save money! With SEI Fiber’s fast fiber internet, you don’t have to worry about interruptions or delays in your movie nights. Our reliable Wi-Fi connection will ensure a positive viewing experience for you and your family! When you stream, you don’t have to limit your viewing to your TV. Watch your favorite shows on any device, whether it’s on your phone at the gym or taking your tablet out to the porch. Wherever you have internet connection and a device, you’ll be able to log onto your streaming platform and press play! Streaming video also reduces the amount of time you spend watching commercials. Many of the most popular subscription streaming services let you watch your content commercial-free or include an option to skip the ads. Which Streaming Platforms Should I Choose? As the world moves from cable into streaming, more subscription services are becoming available. How do you choose which is best for you? Depending on what you like to watch, you may just need one or two subscriptions. Even if you want multiple subscriptions, you can often package them together to end up with a lower-cost result than cable TV. Here, we’ll explain each of the most popular streaming services and the factors you should take into consideration: There are two different kinds of streaming: On-Demand and live. With On-Demand, you can watch a selected movie or show whenever you like. Most On-Demand providers allow you to pause, play, fast-forward, rewind, or rewatch shows as often as needed. Live TV streaming lets you watch content like local news channels, sports, and TV shows live. Features such as video recording, pause, and rewind vary according to the provider. Some providers combine On-Demand and live streaming and allow you to watch live content real-time or after the initial broadcast. With some live TV streaming services, like DIRECTV Stream, Sling TV, and YouTube TV, you can record your favorite shows and store them in the cloud so that they're always available to you. We encourage you to do additional research to find the best streaming TV service for you. For instance, you can get a package deal that combines Hulu+ Live TV with Disney+ and ESPN+, for $69.99 a month. You can use many different add-ons to combine services and get the most out of your streaming experience. If you’re still hesitant, check out the available free trials. You never know if you’ll end up preferring streaming over cable TV. If you want an easy way to find the best streaming option for you, use our MyBundleTV tool for customized recommendations. Setting Up Streaming: Streaming video over your fiber internet is a quick and easy way to enjoy interruption-free entertainment anywhere in your house! What do you need? Fast and reliable internet (you can already check this one off if you have SEI Fiber) A streaming device such as: An Amazon Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, or Roku Streaming Stick that is connected to your TV and Wi-Fi. Streaming devices include a universal remote control to sync with your TV. A Smart TV that is connected to the internet. A tablet, laptop, or smartphone that is connected to Wi-Fi. Keep in mind that you don’t need all of these. Depending on your streaming needs, choose one that will work for you and enjoy! A subscription service to a streaming service or channel, as explained above. If you opt for a Smart TV or Roku stick, your platforms will be streamlined and even more user-friendly. With some Amazon Fire TV Stick remotes, you can use voice control through Alexa to search for a specific movie or show across all your subscription services at once. To ensure your TV receives a strong Wi-Fi signal, make sure your router is centrally located in your home. If you want to stream in a room that is far from your router and has a weaker signal, you may want to consider purchasing a Wi-Fi extender ! It will ensure that every corner of your home has a connection you can count on. With SEI Fiber’s new customized streaming tool, you’ll be able to submit your entertainment preferences and discover what streaming services would be recommended for you. You can even search your favorite TV shows to find new ways to watch them via streaming. Get started with MyBundleTV .

  • ecobee Smart Thermostat ProgramAgreement | SEIREMC

Southeastern Indiana Rural Electric Membership Corporation ecobee Residential Smart Thermostat Program Agreement Thank you for your interest in the Southeastern Indiana Rural Electric Membership Corporation’s (“Cooperative”) Residential Smart Thermostat Program (“Program”), a service offered in partnership with ecobee, Ltd (“ecobee”), to help reduce the Cooperative’s kilowatt demand during critical periods (“Event”). The Program allows you to participate in a program for residential customers offered by the Cooperative using an ecobee3 lite* thermostat (“thermostat”). As part of the Program, customers will receive a personally optimized curtailment adjustment to the thermostat to reduce demand on the electric grid. With eco+ enabled, the temperature adjustment is an optimization algorithm that will be tailored to the customer’s savings preferences. An optimization algorithm is unique to each customer and is a combination of input from the customer (dictated by the comfort preference scale in the eco+ set up), thermodynamics of the home, performance of the HVAC system, Event length, pre-cool or pre-heat setting and occupancy patterns. At any time, the customer may opt out of an Event or override this automatic change simply by adjusting the thermostat to a different temperature or using the ecobee mobile application. Eligibility Requirements The Program is available to Cooperative residential electric members who meet certain eligibility requirements. In order to participate, you must: (a) be a Cooperative residential electric service active account holder; (b) have a reliable high-speed internet service at the Cooperative electric service address; (c) have an active ecobee account linked to your ecobee thermostat; and (d) agree to the terms and conditions set forth in this Agreement. In addition, the Program is offered by the Cooperative for the summer season (June, July and August) and winter season (December, January and February), and requires an installed operable ecobee thermostat. During the summer season the ecobee thermostat must be controlling an air conditioning unit, and during the winter season the ecobee thermostat must be controlling any electric heat source, both at your Cooperative service address. Incentive(s) During the Program, Cooperative account holders participating in the Program are eligible to receive an ecobee3 lite* thermostat at no additional cost (“Incentive”) for enrolling and continued enrollment in the Program for at least two (2) years. The Cooperative will provide a $10 incentive for each of the summer months (June, July, August) and winter months (December, January, February) for participation in load shed events. The Cooperative may choose to develop and implement other incentive offers related to thermostat operation. If the Cooperative develops additional incentives, the account holder is eligible to participate in these future offers. The Cooperative will contact the account holder in the event additional offers become available. The Incentives are provided solely by the Cooperative. ecobee bears no responsibility for the Incentives. The Cooperative reserves the right to seek further information to verify your eligibility for the Incentives. If you opt out of a load shed event, you will not receive the incentive. Consistently opting out of load shed events within the first 2 years will result in termination from the program and you will be charged the cost of the ecobee device. * If you are currently enrolled in the Generac Generator Program you are ineligible for the ecobee Smart Thermostat Program. Agreement By submitting this Agreement, you agree that: ecobee may share certain information (including, but not limited to, your name, email address, service address, Cooperative account number, ecobee thermostat serial number, activation date, ecobee account status, operational data such as temperature set point, fan status, heating or cooling mode, compressor and fan runtimes, and opt-in or opt-out status) with the Cooperative and its third party program implementers, contractors, and/or agents to verify that you are eligible to participate in the Program, to implement the Program, and to evaluate the comprehensive energy impact of the ecobee thermostat. In addition, ecobee may share with the Cooperative your decision to opt out of Program or your deletion of your ecobee account, each of which will automatically result in the termination of your enrollment in Program. Member agrees to maintain network connectivity to the thermostat through Member’s high-speed internet service, and agrees, to the extent practical, to keep network connection in operating condition. Member agrees to be contacted by e-mail, text, mail, or telephone if, for any reason, Cooperative needs to verify connectivity, or member status. Member agrees to allow Cooperative employees or its contractors access to the participating thermostat installation. The information you have provided as part of this Agreement is truthful and you meet the minimum eligibility requirements. ecobee or the Cooperative may terminate this Agreement and not enroll you, or terminate your enrollment in the Program if you are not truthful in the information you submit as part of this Agreement, if you do not satisfy eligibility requirements, or for any other reason. You are using Program on a voluntary basis. You agree to participate in the Program in accordance with the ecobee Terms of Service, privacy policies and other policies on ecobee’s website (www.ecobee.com/legal/use/) and applicable laws and regulations. You release and hold harmless ecobee and the Cooperative from any liability, claim, demand, cause of action, damage or expense resulting from your participation in the Program. This Agreement is effective upon your submitting this Agreement and will continue until you, the Cooperative or ecobee cancels your participation. * ecobee thermostat model may change at the discretion of the Cooperative. • Patronage Capital | SEIREMC

Patronage Capital Patronage Capital refunds (or also known as capital credits) are retained margins left over at the end of a year at a not-for-profit electric cooperative. Capital credits represent the most significant source of equity for Southeastern Indiana REMC. Since a cooperative’s “shareholders” are also the people the co-op serves, capital credits reflect each member’s ownership in the cooperative. This differs from dividends that investor-owned utilities pay shareholders, who may or may not be customers of the utility. The information contained in this website listing is for general information purposes only. The list of names is provided by “Southeastern Indiana REMC”. Although we will strive to keep the names up-to-date and correct, we make no representations or warranties of any kind, express or implied, about the completeness, accuracy, or reliability with respect to the list of names provided on this website. Forms: Individual Claim Form | Business HOW MUCH PATRONAGE (CAPITAL CREDITS) IS BEING REFUNDED IN 2022? Your Board approved refunding capital credits for the years 1999, and part of 2020. The total amount of patronage to be refunded is $1,514,590.85. We typically only refund around 74% of this amount or about $1,120,797.23 due to not having a valid address for some former members. WHERE DOES THE MONEY COME FROM? Member-owned, not-for-profit electric utilities like Southeastern Indiana REMC set rates to generate enough money to pay operating costs, make payments on any loans, and provide an emergency reserve. At the end of each calendar year, we subtract operating expenses from the total amount of money collected during the year. The balance is called a margin. HOW ARE MARGINS ALLOCATED? Margins are allocated to members as capital credits based on their purchases from the cooperative – how much power the member used. Member purchases may also be called patronage. WHY DOES MY COOPERATIVE REFUND CAPITAL CREDITS? Doing so follows one of our seven cooperative principles – Members’ Economic Participation – through rotation of capital. Capital rotation/refund, when determined feasible by the Board, is also required to meet IRS requirements to maintain our 501 C12 tax status. Capital rotation/refund is also used as a tool to target our optimum equity range, which falls between 40% to 60%. If cash is available and equity is on the high end of the range, a capital credit refund to members is an appropriate consideration of our Board in controlling our system equity. ARE CAPITAL CREDITS REFUNDED EVERY YEAR? Each year, the Southeastern Indiana REMC Board of Directors decides whether to refund capital credits based on the financial health of the cooperative. During some years, the co-op may experience extreme weather patterns which significantly affects kWh sales and margins, high growth in the number of new accounts added, maintaining an optimal equity level, rate inadequacy due to inflated costs since the last rate revision, or severe storms may result in the need to spend additional funds to repair lines and restore electric service. These events might lower cash and member equity, causing the board to defer any capital credit refund. For this reason, Southeastern Indiana REMC’s ability to return margins to members in the form of capital credits reflects your cooperative’s strength and financial stability. DO I LOSE MY CAPITAL CREDITS IN THE YEARS THE CO-OP DECIDES NOT TO MAKE REFUNDS? No. All capital credits from every year members have been served by Southeastern Indiana REMC are maintained until such time as the board refunds them. Prior to this year, Southeastern Indiana REMC refunded all capital credits through 1998 and parts of 2017-2019. HOW MUCH HAS SOUTHEASTERN INDIANA REMC PAID IN TOTAL CAPITAL CREDIT REFUNDS SINCE IT BEGAN IN 1939? Southeastern Indiana REMC has paid $30,418,955.23 in capital credit refunds to current and former members to date. HOW OFTEN DO MEMBERS RECEIVE CAPITAL CREDITS? The Southeastern Indiana REMC Board of Directors decides each year whether to refund capital credits. When the cooperative is strong enough financially and the member equity levels are high enough, the board directs staff to refund some portion of past years’ capital credits. HOW WILL REFUNDS BE ISSUED? Members currently receiving electric service will see the refund as a separate line item on their electric bill in March. Inactive members (with capital credits due) will receive a capital credit check. Due to the expense involved in processing printed checks, the minimum capital credit check that will be written will be $5. WHAT IF I HAVE MOVED? If you move or no longer have electric service with Southeastern Indiana REMC it is important to keep your address current, so future disbursements can be properly mailed. Capital credits are reserved for members even if they move out of the Southeastern Indiana REMC service area. Southeastern Indiana REMC will make a diligent effort to send a check to a valid address by mail. HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL GET REFUNDS? Roughly 21,850 currently active members will receive a bill credit on their primary electric account and another 8,550 active members (i.e. Beneficiaries) will receive a check from Southeastern Indiana REMC. More Information We appreciate the opportunity to serve you and thank you for being a member. If you have additional questions about capital credits, please call (812) 689-4111.
